Zemi Visit to The Printing Museum 英語コミュニケーション学科
Some of Germainゼミ 3rd year students visited the Printing Museum in Iidabashi. We saw a very interesting exhibition featuring the best of new Japanese packaging. Packaging is not strictly part of advertising, but the launch of a new product or a product renewal campaign are very often associated with new packaging, which is done in addition to advertising. Packaging is also a very strong part of branding as it helps make brand identity stronger.
After the special exhibition, we visited the regular collection which introduces the history of printing, from early times to the present. It is fascinating to see how the development of printing technology allowed the creation of mass media and communication. And of course, advertising took full advantage of the new technologies to allow businesses to increase both their exposure and their client base.
The museum's Printing House holds a wide variety of typefaces and fonts, which provides a good opportunity to see how letters and text have changed over time, and to understand how typefaces influence written communication.
We then took part in a letterpress (活版印刷) workshop and created our own original coasters!
Using Advertising (広告), and the language of adverts and CMs, to learn English, understand other societies and the ways advertising influences them and us. My main focus is on the representation of gender in advertising, and how that affects men and women's perception of themselves and others.
