DIALOGUE

Character: Makoto is a student and Ken is her teacher.
Situation: Makoto has come to Ken's office to ask for advice.

Makoto
Excuse me, but do you have a minute?
Ken
Sure, Yuuko, come in and have a seat. What can I do for you today?
Makoto
Well, I'd like to ask your advice on something.
Ken
Yes, what is it?
Makoto
I'm a little worried about my listening ability. I can't understand everything that you say in class.
Ken
How much do you understand?
Makoto
About 60%.
Ken
Well, that's not bad. After all, it's only the second week of class. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your listening will improve with time. But here are a few suggestions for you. First of all, sit near the front of the room.
Makoto
Okay.
Ken
Second, focus as hard as you can on the topic that I am talking about.
Makoto
All right.
Ken
Most importantly, stop me when you don't understand. Just raise your hand and say, "Excuse me, could you speak more slowly, please?" or "Excuse me, could you repeat that, please?" Remember that an active listener is a good listener.
Makoto
Yes, that's true. Thanks for your advice, I'll do my best.
Ken
Good, if you're still having problems in a few weeks, please come back and talk with me again.
Makoto
Okay, I will.
Ken
Anything else today?
Makoto
No, I don't think so.
Ken
Well then, it's been nice talking with you. Please come again if you have any other questions.
Makoto
Yes, I will. Thank you very much for your time.
Ken
I'll see you again.
